"Is this not the great Babylon which I have built as the royal residence by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty!"(Daniel 4:30) Aerial view of the center of Babylon looking south late in the afternoon. The Ishtar Gate stands out with its blue glazed brick work amidst formidable fortifications, inside of which sprawls the royal palace complex. The largest of the palace court yards is also faced with blue tiles on the facade of the throne room. Another illustration zooms in on that courtyard where the high ranking Jewish exiles were gathered and assigned to their posts. The Etemenanki, the temple complex of Marduk, Babylon's main deity, occupies the heart of the metropolis with the ziggurat as its focal point. It is commonly known as the Tower of Babel. Large scale excavations by several German teams spanning a century revealed extensive portions of the city and its fortifications enabling us to visualize the greatest metropolis of the Iron Age without having to resort to much guess work. The illustration is based on excavation plans and some existing 3D models taking a stab at the elevation.
