An exceptionally well preserved mural was discovered during the excavation of the royal palace of Mari, an important city along the middle Euphrates River in today's Syria. King Zimri Lim commissioned the mural to depict his ascension to the throne. The goddess Ishtar is shown handing him the royal insignias as water flows from jugs held by divine angelic ladies. Four cherubim guard the scene. Four date palms flank the space. A dove is painted as it alights on a branch. The mural, on display in the Louvre, is now in terrible condition and I decided to revive it and place it in its original context. The king Zimri Lim is shown chatting with his queen who is feeding doves in the courtyard where the mural was found. A blind singer performs as a young musician accompanies him on a harp.
