This illustration relies entirely on the published work of Austrian archaeologist Dr. Manfred Bietak who is excavating the site of Tel el Dab'a in the Nile Delta. In the foreground is the 18th dynasty royal palace, further up in the distance is the so-called "Joseph's palace" and beyond it is the great Seth Temple by the central harbor. A major branch of the Nile flowed past the city into the Mediterranean Sea making Avaris the most important sea port of Egypt in this period. Several water ways connected parts of the city that has been called the "Venice of Egypt".
